Heraeus Epurio and AI SILK Introduce Groundbreaking Dry-Type Conductive Smart Textiles at CES Las Vegas

Innovation

Heraeus Epurio, the manufacturer of the pioneering conductive polymer Clevios™, and AI SILK®, the Japanese smart textiles innovation leader, are proud to showcase the advanced conductive smart textile LEAD SKIN® AIR at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas.

Dubbed as dry-type conductive material, LEAD SKIN® AIR does not require gel or water for superior skin contact. It boasts of excellent durability and resistance to corrosion caused by sweat or washing, making it ideal for sports and fitness apparel. Because it uses metal-free conductive polymer textile coating technology, it offers silky smoothness while being safe for sensitive skin – providing unparalleled comfort versus other smart textiles.

AI SILK® developed the innovative new conductive textile LEAD SKIN® through dyeing technology. Since 2015, the company has seamlessly integrated conductive electrodes into fabrics, creating apparel that can monitor health signals, regulate temperature, and even give haptic feedback. The conductive textile coating technology offers unique flexibility and comfort, coupled with high conductivity and durability.

Clevios™, the pioneer and leader in PEDOT chemistry, is coated on the fibers and provides the material with excellent conductivity. Utilizing the technology of applying special processing to various normal textiles to make electrodes, LEAD SKIN® is developed from conductive textiles that are smooth and soft to the touch.

The featured demonstrators in the Heraeus booth at CES are:

  • All-textile based capacitive touch sensor with LEAD SKIN® integrated in an automotive interior touch pad. It can detect multi-touch, following the trend in automotive interior design to make textile or artificial leather-based surfaces smart with integrated touch sensors, e.g., for advanced human machine interfaces.
  • Automotive steering wheel sensors with LEAD SKIN® AIR that allow the driver to measure vital body data, such as electrocardiogram and heart rate.
  • All-textile based pressure sensor with LEAD SKIN®, which uses electrical impedance tomography technology and is placed on the surface of the automobile driver's seat, realizes various controls depending on the driver's sitting position.

"Heraeus Epurio is committed to advancing smart textiles using conductive polymers," said Dr Armin Sautter, Global Head of Product Portfolio Management for Display and New Technologies, Heraeus Epurio. "With Clevios™ conductive polymers, smart textiles combine style with practicality, enabling not only customer-centric applications but also addressing various industrial needs."

"We are pleased to present LEAD SKIN® AIR, a conductive textile that can be used in dry conditions, " said Mr. Hideo Okano, CEO at AI SILK. "This textile is intended to be used not only in wearable devices, but also inside automobiles."As the premier global stage for innovation, CES is the perfect backdrop for cutting-edge, electronics-enabled fabrics designed to revolutionize wearable technology in the consumer market. The unveiling of these revolutionary conductive smart textiles at CES underscores Heraeus Epurio and AI SILK®’s commitment to innovative solutions.
